Brainstorming Idea!

hey there, just had an idea, I don't know about you guys but I work best when I have a deadline, maybe if we say we all need 5 game ideas by next week (not saying we have to settle on one, but we can use parts of the ideas etc etc). I'm not saying you have to do this, just an idea :

  1. Hmm i like the thought, but how about next week Wednesday instead of Monday, is that cool with you dudes? Also what kinda game are we thinking? I read you wanted to make a childrens game? Does that mean no weapons, fighting, killing etc? Or does it just mean we should censor stuff like that(if there is any)?

  2. I don't think we should focus too conciously on censoring our ideas to suit childrens games. Children can still enjoy combat and weapons, although we could look at it more as thinking of what children would enjoy rather than what they would not.

  3. I don't know where to begin, so I figure i should just share what I'm interested in, it would be helpful if everyone else could make a similar list and we can see where we have some common ground.

    Elements I like:
Twisted Fairy Tales, ambiguous time periods (50's dress in a modern setting etc.), Carnivals, The theatre, Robots, Dr Seuss, Dark Humour, Clowns, Pattern, Masks, Festivals, Melancholia, Classic Horror Films, Blurring the divide between Monsters and People, Rhyme, Insanity, Contrast (Big - Small, Bright - Dark).

    Games I enjoy:
Medievil Resurrection, DeathSpank, Fable (Only number 1, 2 and 3 were horrible), Theme Park World (so old), Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Psychonauts, Stacking, (anything by DoubleFine and Tim Schafer really).

  4. I've been thinking about what I liked in games as a kid so that we can keep it in mind.

-I liked games where I could choose how to do the story. Point and click adventure games like putt putt where you could choose which order you did everything in before the end of the game or even leave out elements.

-techinically difficult games that I could sit down and try to beat for ages. People seem to think 'kids games' means easy but when there was a dumbed down kids version of a game I always preffered the regular version.

-violence: One of my favourite games when I was yong was a side scrolling shooter with very dark, gritty artwork. You had to shoot monsters which had mutated from humans. Tha pacing was amazing and I loved the tactical challenge of managing different types of ammo and beating all the weird enemies (it was called abuse you can get it on dosbox)

    - Exploration: I think all of the things I already mentioned play nicely into exploration. When a game has different types of enemies during the progression you gain a sense of exploration and it feels like you're going deeper into the world of the game. Likewise in a game with levels or a point and click with different sections you feel like you are exploring and discovering the world of the game.

I like way too many games so I'll just list some I liked when I was younger since we're tossing around kids game ideas

    -simcity 2000
    -Lemmings
    -crystal crazy
    -Fatty Bear
-Putt Putt goes to the parade
    -The Manhole

Apologies if you haven't heard of these, it seems I began life as a PC gamer

  5. Let me see, I like games where I can feel invested in the characters, (I cry in movies with embarrassing regularity and I do the same thing if I really love the characters in games), same when i'm reading books, like all the Brent Weeks books etc

I also like them when you can customize/ choose what you want but if the story is good enough I'll be quite happy to just go along for the ride.

I also love games with a good sense of humour (not when the whole game is funny but sly one liners or funny objects in a room that make you look twice then realise what it is).

Something I can't do is have a game where an animal dies, stupid and silly, perhaps, but yes.... kill all the humans you like though.

Elements I like: humour, twisted weird clever bad guys, back stories, multiple collectable objects (where you need to keep going back in order to find ALL THE GEMS or ALL THE BOOKS something like that), the 60s, games that make you think "surely the creators were stoned/ high on acid when they made this", games that make you jump up in fright occasionally but arn't necessarily a scary game (kind of like when I played uncharted, puzzles, guns, hot main character dude, all good, im in the groove etcetc then out of nowhere crazy monster dudes that would RUN at you)

Things I like (games, books): Roald Dahls revolting rhymes (just thought id include this in case we are sticking with the kids thing, also Grims fairytales), Brent Weeks, Brandon Sanderson, John Birmingham, games, portal, spyro (totally agree Alex, played that non-stop as a kid, as well as Crash bandicoot), this game where you played as kids in a haunted mansion that had to catch ghosts or something along those lines, completely forgotten the name of it...

I think there are too many "cutesy" kids games today, and the ones that arn't like that are educational! Something that could bring back the creepy morality of grims fairytales etc sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

Or a completely batshit crazy commedy kids game, (Rocko's modern life in game form), something that gamer parents could play with their kids and get a good laugh out of.

Seems like a lot of kids today just want to play the same games as everyone else, like GTA and COD, be great to create something thatd actually appeal to them that wasn't as mind numbingly EXPLOSIONSGUNSPOWPOWPOWPOWPOW

God I hope that all made sense in some way... (i'll have more ideas later when i'm not sick/ waiting for my panadol to kick in) if you don't know the books i'm talking about I HIGHLY recommend them (if your looking for something to read), some great fantasy reading (cept for John Birmingham which is based on his life in sharehouses eg He Died With A Fellafel In His Hand... would probs make your housemates look like the best people on earth Chris!)

  6. Hmm okay to be perfectly honest I would be happy to make any type of game, and yes I realise that this is a bit of a cop out of an answer but its the truth, all of the above ideas and concepts work for me, so as long as you dudes are happy and the game has some element of difficulty to it im happy :D

  7. Everything is sounding good so far. I can't really come up with an idea for a game without bouncing ideas off of people. If I go away by myself I tend to get too invested in an idea and that's not good for group work. I'll keep thinking though. I'm leaning towards an adventure game, I don't like them a lot, but it seems that it would satisfy what most of us want to do.

The main reason I don't like to make them is that it requires a lot of investment. Puzzle games are easy because you can just repeat things, but adventure games require something new every time otherwise they're shit.

  8. P.S. Like the new Spyro games, Sarah knows what I'm talking about :P

  9. I know what you mean but I think since we have a very creative group we'll be able to pull off an adventure game and find it really good for showing off artwork. I'm thinking of ideas, perhaps I shall have some to put up soon and we can start bouncing around with them

  10. If we lean towards adventure we should try and get the most epic storyline ever bashed out before we go back to uni next year, not that we can't change it but it'd be good to know exactly what we want to achieve.

  11. Adventure games are awesome, it sounds like we're talking adventure games ala 90s platformers and not point and click but I'm not sure?

Favourite games are probably Super Metroid, Ace Attorney, Mass Effect 2, Pokemon (Yellow especially), Crisis Core, Valkyria Chronicles and Disgaea.

So yeah I'm a sucker for good characters and dialog especially. And yeah I err closer to the folklore side of fantasy as well. Humour and excellent set pieces are always exciting.

I think the thing that turns me off some games the most is when something that seems important is obscured. Like an element of a puzzle or an important plot point.

But yeah everything we have so far sounds really awesome :) Happy hollidays guys
